Streaming — Impossible to Test

I couldn’t test CovermeVPN’s streaming abilities as I wasn’t able to stay connected to a server. Every time I tried to connect to a server, I was instantly disconnected and logged out of my account completely. When I contacted customer support about this issue, the agent sent me a different installation file to replace the old one. I tried to install the new file, but my device flagged up security warnings telling me that it was unsafe.

Speed — Unable to Test Due to Connection Issues

The website states it’s “the fastest VPN,” but I can’t confirm this. Since I couldn’t get it working, I highly doubt it. Every VPN will slow you down a little because your traffic has to be encrypted and rerouted. However, the best VPNs reduce your speed so slightly, it’s barely noticeable.

Similar to streaming, I couldn’t test CovermeVPN for gaming. So I can’t tell you if it offers good ping for gaming — ideally less than 100 milliseconds (ms). I also didn’t notice any mention of gaming anywhere on the website. I tried contacting customer support several times through chat support and email, but I didn’t receive any response.

So, I can’t recommend CovermeVPN for gaming. All the issues I ran into with it don’t give me confidence it could give you the proper ping rates you need for lag-free gaming. Server Network — Untrustworthy Servers That Don’t Match Its Claims

CovermeVPN has a fairly large server network with 3000 servers in 140 countries. Servers are divided into 2 major categories: dedicated IP and dynamic IP addresses.

A dedicated IP address can only be used by you. It allows you to use the VPN as usual, but every time you connect, you’ll have the same IP address. However, Dynamic IP addresses may offer more privacy because there are usually hundreds of different people using the same IP address, so it becomes harder for anyone to track you or your online activity.

The first thing I noticed when I logged into the app was that the list of servers on the app didn’t match the list on its website. Many locations listed on the website don’t appear in the actual server list. This makes me wonder if anything on the website is accurate. I already had zero trust in this VPN after the horrible connection issues I went through, and this just sealed the deal.

Due to this inconsistency, I wasn’t able to find a definite answer about how many servers the VPN has or their global distribution. I contacted customer support through its chat function and the ticketing option. But, of course, they never responded.

Since I couldn’t confirm how many servers it has, I also can’t tell whether it has any city-specific servers or any virtual locations. I couldn’t get any information on whether CovermeVPN owns its servers or whether some (or all of them) are rented.

What makes it even worse is that I couldn’t test the app to know whether any of the servers work as advertised. I recommend, you test one of the VPNs in this list, which all have extensive networks.

Security — Basic Security Features, That I Couldn’t Confirm

CovermeVPN has the most common security features, but the app itself appears dangerous. When I tried to install the software on my Windows PC, security instantly warned me that the download was potentially harmful.

I scanned it on VirusTotal.com, and it immediately showed a Trojan horse infection. This is a dangerous type of malware that, in most cases, does not show any visible symptoms while in the operating system. However, to be fair, the next several times I tested it, CovemeVPN came back clean. But, combined with all its other problems, this didn’t make me feel safe using it.

CovermeVPN claims to offer AES-256-bit encryption and a wide range of protocols — IKEV, L2TP, PPTP, SSTP, and OpenVPN TCP and UDP. However, there is no option to switch protocols anywhere on the app. So, I’m not convinced that these work as they are supposed to. Plus, I wasn’t able to test the app, so I can’t confirm whether CovermeVPN prevents hacks and data leaks or truly keeps you safe online.

I did find an option to activate its kill switch on the app, but I couldn’t test it since I couldn’t stay connected to a server for longer than a few seconds. Once again, I can’t be sure if this necessary feature actually works.

In my opinion, CovermeVPN is not safe to use. The fact that the app itself is flagged as dangerous suggests that you proceed with caution. I recommend you choose one of the safest VPNs from this list.

Privacy — Vague Privacy Policy

CovermeVPN has a bare bones privacy policy that doesn’t say anything about logging your IP, browsing history, or anything related to your use of the service. I also couldn’t find any evidence of whether or not the policy has been audited and verified by any third party. But the fact that the policy itself is incomplete makes it highly likely no audit has been carried out by a qualified third party.

Does CovermeVPN Keep Logs? It States Not To

CovermeVPN claims that it does not collect, keep, or share information about you and the way you use the VPN. However, I was very disappointed when I found out that its privacy policy barely contains any information to this effect.

In fact, the privacy policy only covers your use of the VPN’s website. The “Additional Information” section on how CovermeVPN protects your actual data is left blank. As someone who is very sensitive about my online privacy, this gave me the chills. It made me scared that some of my information might have been harvested and shared.

I couldn’t find any information about whether or not CovermeVPN has been audited. I also couldn’t get this information from its unresponsive customer support. Therefore, I can’t confirm whether or not CovermeVPN has been audited and verified by a third party. However, I’m fairly confident it hasn’t. I’ve never seen a VPN that wasn’t proud to talk about its audits. It’s an expensive and time-consuming process that no serious company would want to waste.

CovermeVPN is located in the UK, one of the founding countries of the 5 Eyes Alliance. The 14-Eyes Alliance is an intelligence-sharing alliance among several countries, which could potentially lead to data sharing and surveillance. This means that the service operates under the Alliance’s privacy laws. So, I don’t trust CovermeVPN to provide real online anonymity and privacy protection.

Does CovermeVPN Work in China? Probably Not

I couldn’t confirm whether CovermeVPN works in China. From my experience, only the most powerful VPNs work in China. Typically, the government targets the technology itself rather than the individuals using it. So, it’s very unlikely that CovermeVPN, with its questionable security features, can safely Access content from China.

Using CovermeVPN for torrenting is most likely dangerous. I’m not even sure if P2P file sharing is allowed; there are no optimized servers, and torrenting isn’t mentioned anywhere on the website. Plus, I couldn’t test the app to see for myself whether or not it can support torrenting. I tried contacting support to ask, but I never received an answer.

The VPN is based in the UK, a country that participates in an international data-sharing agreement. This raises concerns for me that its privacy policy might be subject to change down the line. This adds another layer of worry on top of existing security issues with the apps.

While I never condone any form of illegal torrenting, P2P file sharing is legal in most countries. My recommendation is that you only download files in the public domain. If you want to protect yourself while you use P2P networks, I’d recommend you choose one of these reliable and safe torrenting VPNs.
